Description of key information

The toxicity of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene towards the growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis was investigated with a test duration of 24 h (Yoshioka, 1985). Tests were carried out under sterile conditions and evaluated on the basis of cell counting. On the basis of these conditions, an EC50 of 10 mg/L was determined.
4-Chlorophenyl isocyanate is know to rapidly hydrolyse forming 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene as only hydrolysis product with a half-live of 7.3 h. With respect to a test duration of 24 h, it can be assumed that observed effects are rather caused by the hy-drolysis product than by the parent substance. Thus, the effect of 1-amino-4-chlorobenzene was chosen to characterize the ecotoxicological potential of 4-chlorophenyl isocyanate towards microorganisms.
