Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The surface tension of acetic acid is 26.3 mN/m at 30˚C
The surface tension of 1 g/L Basic Yellow 28 Methyl Sulfate in aqueous solution is 48.62 mN/m at 20°C

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Surface tension:
48.62
in mN/m at 20°C and concentration in mg/L:
1 000

Additional information

The test substance is an aqueous solution in 40 % acetic acid. Basic Yellow 28 Acetate is only stable in presence of significant concentrations of free acetic acid; it can not be isolated as such. Therefore, the acetic acid solution is relevant for the surface tension and not the Basic Yellow 28 Acetate. The surface tension of acetic acid is 26.3 mN/m at 30 ˚C

The surface tension of Basic Yellow 28 Methyl Sulfate was determined according to OECD guideline 115 (ring method). An aqueous solution at ambient temperature of the test substance with a concentration of 1.0 g/L was prepared. Six measurements at a temperature of 20 °C were done.

The surface tension corrected according to Zuidema and Waters of the aqueous solution at 20 °C is 48.62 mN/m.

Hence, the test item has surface-active properties.
