Bioaccumulation: aquatic / sediment

Description of key information
The study does not need to be conducted because isobutyl acrylate has a low potential for bioaccumulation based on log Kow < 3. The measured log Pow of 2.38 (25 °C) and the calculated BCF of 17.3 give no indication for a potential for bioaccumulation.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- BCF (aquatic species):
- 17.3 dimensionless
Additional information
Non submission justification
According to column 2 of Annex IX to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH) the study does not need to be conducted if the substance has a log Kow < 3 indicating a low potential for bioaccumulation. The experimental log Pow of isobutyl acrylate was determined to be 2.38 (please refer to IUCLID section 4.7). This value is clearly below the trigger value of 3 given in REACH Annex IX and bioaccumulative potential is hence not to be expected. The conclusion is supported by a BCF value calculated by Q(SAR) data using SRC BCFBAF v3.01 (BCF = 17.3) (BASF SE 2021).
Moreover, direct or indirect exposure of the aquatic compartment is not to be expected as the sole use of the isobutyl acrylate monomer is as a chemical intermediate in the production of polymeric resins (emulsion polymers) with other monomers such as acrylic acid and its salts, amides, esters, methacrylates, acrylonitrile etc. Isobutyl acrylateis handled primarily, if not exclusively, in closedsystems. This use of isobutyl acrylate as a monomer for the production of copolymers in closed systems indicates that environmental exposure would be limited.
Therefore, additional testing is scientifically not justified.
Supporting information
There are no experimental results on bioaccumulation of isobutyl acrylate and the source substances n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate available.
In analogy to isobutyl acrylate BCF values were calculated for the source substances using SRC BCFBAF v3.01 (BASF SE 2015, BASF SE 2017). The bioaccumulation factor for n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate were calculated to be BCF = 17.3 and BCF = 15.8, respectively. Using the Veith equation as performed by Staples et al. (2000) resulted in a BCF of 37 for n-butyl acrylate.
Conclusion
No experimental results on bioaccumulation of isobutyl acrylate and the source substances n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate are available. The study was waived because isobutyl acrylate has a low potential for bioaccumulation based on log Kow < 3. However, based on (Q)SAR data calculated using SRC BCFBAF v3.01 the BCF was estimated to be 17.3. The BCF values estimated for the source substances n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate are comparably low: BCF = 17.3 and BCF = 15.8, respectively. These results indicate that neither the registration substance isobutyl acrylate nor for the source substances n-butyl acrylate and tert-butyl acrylate accumulate in organisms.
