Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic organisms.

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

This aquatic toxicity assessment was based on the following data:

The LC50 of the test item to Leuciscus idus was determined to be greater than 10000 mg/L in a study according to DIN 38 412, part L15 (BASF 10F0638/885040, 1989). Furthermore, data of a read-across substance on the acute toxicity to Leuciscus idus are available. In this study, which was conducted according to OECD 203, the LC50 (96h) was found to be greater than 1000 mg/L.

Therefore, the test substance is considered with high probability acutely not harmful to fish.

Acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates was tested using a static approach in a GLP test according to OECD guideline 202. After 48 hours of exposure of the aquatic invertebrate Daphnia magna an EC50 > 100 mg/L was found, related to the analytically verified nominal concentration. The NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L (Laus 11012603G201, 2011). These results are supported by another study on daphnids (BASF AG 9.967, 1989) and by the outcoming of a read-across study on daphnids in which no toxic effects in the highest nominal concentration of 100 mg/L were determined (DOW 1992).

Based on these data, the test substance is considered with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

The EC10 value of the test substance on green algea was determined to be greater than 500 mg/L in a guideline study according to DIN 38412 L9 (BASF 09967, 1990). Additionally, data of a read-across substance on the toxicity to the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus are available. In this study, no toxic effects were observable in the highest concentration of 100 mg/L nominally. The nominal concentrations were analytically verified (Bayer 1232 A/02 A1, 2003).

Therefore, the test substance is considered with high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.

Toxicity to bacteria was tested according to GLP and OECD guideline 209 using domestic activated sludge as inoculum. After 180 minutes of exposure an EC10 of 640 mg/L was found while the EC50 was estimated to be > 1000 mg/L, related to the nominal concentration (BASF 2011). These results are substantiated by another study according to Bringmann-Kuehn (BASF 9/1891315, 1989) and by three read-across studies on microorganisms (Bayer 2003, Shell 1999 and DOW Europe 1992).

Therefore, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
