Description of key information
Additional information
Vinylidene fluoride is a colourless, odourless gas and has a melting point of -144ºC and a boiling point of -83ºC (The Matheson Gas Data Book, 1966).
In accordance with column 1 or 2 of REACH Annex VII-IX, with section 1 or 2 of REACH Annex XI and/or the REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment (chapter R7.A), data on the particle size, flash point, stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products, explosivity, dissociation constant and viscosity are not needed as the substance is a gas.
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, a relative density study does not need to be conducted as the substance is a gas. An estimation based on calculation shall be made from molecular weight and the Ideal Gas Laws. The relative density with respect to air can be obtained by: RD = ρgas/ρair = Mgas/Mair. As the molecular weight of air is 28.97 and the molecular weight of VDF is 64.04, the relative density is 64.04/28.97 = 2.21. Nevertheless data is available showing that vinylidene fluoride has a relative density of 0.59-0.62 ( Yaws’ Handbook of Thermodynamic and Physical Properties of Chemical Compounds, 2003; Thermodynamic Properties of Halogenated Ethanes and Ethylenes, 1955). This value refers to liquid vinylidene fluoride under its autogenous pressure (about 36 - 40 bar).
In accordance with Annex XI and Chapter R.7 of REACH guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, the vapour pressure study does not need to be conducted for substances with a boiling point < 30 ºC, as these substances will have a vapour pressure above the limit of measurement (>1x10E5 Pa). Nevertheless data is available showing that vinylidene fluoride has a vapour pressure of 35900 hPa at 20ºC (Thermodynamic Properties of Halogenated Ethanes and Ethylenes, 1955).
The octanol/water partition coefficient (log Pow) is 1.24 (Chou et al., 1979 - Hansch et al., 1995) and the water solubility is 254 mg/l at 28ºC (Oriani, 2001).
Based on its structure, vinylidene fluoride is not expected to be surface active.
The self-ignition temperature is 640ºC (Chemical properties handbook, physical, thermodynamic, environmental, transport, safety, and health related properties for organic and inorganic chemicals, 1999). As the lower and upper flammability limits are 5.8% and 20.3%, respectively (Baratov, 1965), vinylidene fluoride has to be classified as extremely flammable (F+, R12 according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and H220 according to EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008). As a result, the substance does not need to be tested for oxidizing properties.
Vinylidene fluoride is a under pressure gas thus it has to be classified as H280 (contains gas under pressure; may explode if heated) according to CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
