First-aid measures

Inhalation

- Remove to fresh air.

- Oxygen or artificial respiration if needed.

- If symptoms persist, call a physician

Eye contact

- Keep eyelids open to allow evaporation of product.

- Flush eyes with running water for several minutes, while keeping the eyelids wide open.

- If eye irritation persists, consult a specialist.

Skin contact

- Allow to evaporate.

- Rinse with lukewarm running water.

- If symptoms persist, call a physician.

Ingestion is not a route of exposure.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media

- powder

- Carbon dioxide (CO2)

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons

- Never use water.

Special exposure hazards in a fire

- Extremely flammable.

- Vapours may form explosive mixtures with air.

- Heating can release hazardous gases.

- Gas/vapours are heavier than air and so may travel along the ground; remote ignition possible.

- Possible dangerous polymerization.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters

- Evacuate personnel to safe areas.

- Intervention only by capable personnel who are trained and aware of the hazards of the product.

- Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

- Fire fighters must wear fire resistant personnel protective equipment.

- Wear chemical resistant oversuit

- Protect intervention team with a water spray as they approach the fire.

- Clean contaminated surface thoroughly.

Other information

- If safe to do so, remove the exposed containers, or cool with large quantities of water.

- Approach from upwind.

- Use a explosimeter/gas detector/oxygen analyser to determine the area of danger.

- Depending on wind direction, warn people of the danger of intoxication, close doors and windows, and switch off the ventilation.

- Evacuate personnel to safe areas.

- Never try to extinguish a leak of burning gas which cannot be stopped or controlled.

- Avoid spraying the leak source.

- After the fire, proceed rapidly to clean the surfaces exposed to the fumes in order to limit the damage to the equipment.

- As for any fire, ventilate and clean the rooms before re-entry.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions

- Refer to protective measures listed in sections 7 and 8.

- Isolate the area.

- Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition.

- Keep away from incompatible products

- Approach from upwind.

- Ventilate the area.

- Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

Environmental precautions

- Should not be released into the environment.

Methods for cleaning up

- Allow to evaporate.

- Prevent product from entering drains.

Handling and storage

Handling

- Carry out all operations in closed piping circuits and equipment.

- Use only in well-ventilated areas.

- Prevent product vapours decomposition from contacting hot spots.

- Use only equipment and materials which are compatible with the product.

- Keep away from heat and sources of ignition.

- Keep away from incompatible products

- No sparking tools should be used.

- Do not use compressed air for transferring or handling the product.

- Purge piping circuits and equipment with nitrogen.

- Transfer using a pump equipped for collection and return of gas/vapour.

Storage

- in air

- Keep away from direct sunlight.

- Keep in a cool, well-ventilated place.

- Keep away from heat and sources of ignition.

- Keep away from incompatible products

- Keep in container fitted with safety valve or vent.

Specific use(s)

- For further information, please contact: Supplier

Packaging material

- Ordinary steel

Other information

- No open flames or sparks, no smoking.

- Provide electrical equipment safe for hazardous locations.

- Ensure all equipment is electrically grounded before beginning transfer operations.

- Take necessary action to avoid static electricity discharge (which might cause ignition of organic vapours).

- Take measures to prevent the build up of electrostatic charge.

- Warn people about the dangers of the product.

- Refer to protective measures listed in sections 7 and 8.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure Limit Values

US ACGIH Threshold Limit Values TWA = 500 ppm

Exposure controls

- Ensure adequate ventilation.

- Refer to protective measures listed in sections 7 and 8.

- Apply technical measures to comply with the occupational exposure limits.

Occupational exposure controls

  Respitoryatory protection

  - In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment.

-Self-contained breathing apparatus in mediumconfinement/insufficient oxygen/in case of large uncontrolled emissions/in all circumstances when    the mask and cartridge do not give adequate protection.

 - In the case of hazardous fumes, wear self contained breathing apparatus.

 - Use only respiratory protection that conforms to international/ national standards.

 Hand protection

 - Wear suitable gloves.

 - Recommended materials: Neoprene

 Eye protection

 - Chemical resistant goggles must be worn.

 - If risk of splashing, chemical proof goggles/face shield.

 Skin and body protection

 - Apron/boots of neoprene if risk of splashing.

 Hygiene measures

 - Shower and eye wash stations.

 - Gloves, overalls and boots have to be double layered (protection against cold temperature).

 - Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Environmental exposure controls

- Dispose of rinse water in accordance with local and national regulations.

Stability and reactivity

Stability

- Violent reaction with AlCl3 and with HCl on liquid form.

- Contact with strong bases or alkaline materials may provoke violent reactions or explosions.

- Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors.

Conditions to avoid

- Heat.

- Naked flames, sparks.

Materials to avoid

- Alkaline earth metals

- Powdered metals

- Light and/or alkaline metals

- Oxidizing agents

- Strong bases

Hazardous decomposition products

- Hydrogen fluoride

- Carbon monoxide

Disposal considerations

Waste from residues / unused products

- In accordance with local and national regulations.

- Refer to manufacturer/supplier for information on recovery/recycling.

Packaging treatment

- To avoid treatments, as far as possible, use dedicated containers.

- Purge the container with nitrogen and direct the gas to a treatment plant.
