Description of key information

Melting point of titanium oxychloride cannot be established as it is technically not possible to conduct this study on a substance which is a reactive chemical intermediate, only stable in aqueous solution at low pH.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

It is not possible to establish a precise melting point for an unstable intermediate like titanium oxychloride. In accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted because it is technically not possible to conduct it as the substance is a reactive chemical intermediate which is only stable in aqueous solution at low pH.

As target compound titanium oxychoride only can get stabilised in aqueous solution in coexistence with hydrochloric acid, any melting point data would refer to a mixture of these three substances, whose percentage on the whole mixture varies from case to case. This is also reflected by the big variation of melting point data reported by three company MSDS.

In this case for the data taken from three MSDS a Klimisch 4 rating was assigned only, as the values reported are varying hugely between "less than 10 °C" and "less than-45°Cand -60°C".
