Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets
Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Administrative data
First-aid measures
Contact with eyes: Wash immediately with water for at least 10 minutes
Swallowing: Induce vomiting. Seek a medical examination immediately and present the safety-data sheet. A suspension of activated charcoal in water, or liquid paraffin may be administered
Inhalation: Ventilate the premises. The patient is to be removed immediately from the contaminated premises and made to rest in a well ventilated area. Should the patient fell unwell, obtain medical attention
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishers not to be used: None in particular.
Risks arising from combustion: Avoid inhaling the fumes which, at high temperature, may contain toxic fumes such as COx, NOx and SOx.
Protective equipment: Use protection for the respiratory tract. Self-contained breathing apparatus.
Accidental release measures
Like other sulfonylurea herbicides there is not a readily available method for neutralisation or decontamination of water. As IR5878 is water soluble, it will not form a layer on top of water bodies which could easily be removed. Any chemical or additive, which could be used to decontaminate water, is likely to be more harmful than IR5878 itself.
On this basis precautions must be taken to avoid contamination, for example:
- minimise spread – products containing IR5878 should not be dumped, spilled, rinsed or washed into sewers or public waterways
- when off-loading, ensure vehicle is in a bunded area, and products containing IR5878 should be stored in well-aired, cool and dry storage area.
Small liquid spills on the floor or other impervious surface should be swept up by means of an inert absorptive material. Scoop into proper containers and dispose as described under the next point.
Large liquid spills on the floor or other impervious surface should be contained or diked and then absorbed with an inert absorptive material. Collect the contaminated absorbent, place in a metal drum and dispose of in accordance with the instructions provided under the next point.
Large spills that soak into the ground should be dug up, placed in metal drums and disposed of in accordance with instructions provided under the next point.
Handling and storage
Keep out of reach of children.
Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs.
When using do not eat, drink or smoke.
On the basis of toxicological profile of it is not appropriate to recommend the use of specific protective clothing or equipment. However on the basis of good agricultural practice when handling pesticides it should be better to wear impermeable gloves and suitable protective clothing and eye/face protection.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Stability and reactivity
It may generates toxic fumes at high temperature, such as COx, NOx and SOx.
Disposal considerations
The recommended means of safe disposal is by controlled incineration at an approved chemical waste facility. This is a standard process and no further detailed instructions are required.
IR5878 decomposes at 185°C.
