Ecotoxicity Labelling for Low Benzene Naphthas

There are no ecotoxicological data available for any of the streams in Category J.

The aquatic toxicity was estimated using the PETROTOX computer model, which combines a partitioning model (used to calculate the aqueous concentration of hydrocarbon components as a function of substance loading) with the Target Lipid Model (used to calculate acute and chronic toxicity of non-polar narcotic chemicals). PETROTOX computes toxicity based on the summation of the aqueous phase concentrations of hydrocarbon block(s) that represent a petroleum substance and membrane water partition coefficients (KMW) that describe the partitioning of the hydrocarbons between the water and organism.

The following short-term LL50s were estimated using the PETROTOX model:

Short-term toxiticity to fish: LL50 value for Onchorhynchus mykiss = 1.1 mg/L.

Short-term toxicity to invertebrates: LL50 value for Daphnia Magna = 1.99 mg/L.

Toxicity to algae: LL50 value for Pseudokirschneriella subcapitata = 0.79 mg/l

Toxicity to microorganisms: LL50 value for activated sludge = 28.99 mg/l

Conclusion

Based on the available predicted data (algal LL50 0.79 mg/L WAF) streams in this category should have the classification Chronic 1 under the CLP regulation. However, the classification of streams in this category may be impacted by other constituents. Components which may impact the classification should be identified by the registrants and the impact of their environmental classification included in the assessment. The classification of each stream can be determined following the equations given in the notes below.
