Description of key information

The test substance has no oxidizing properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

In a GLP compliant study, performed according to EU method A.17, the oxidizing properties of the test substance were determined (Ciba-Geigy 1985). Hot platinum wire (approximately 1000°C) was used as an ignition source. In all the tested mixtures only smouldering fire was observed. For the 60% test sustance:40% cellulose mixture a maximum burning rate of 0.04 mm/s was observed, but only one of the six tests propagated to second reference mark. For the 50:50 mixture, none of the six tests propagated to the second reference mark and extinction was observed after 5 mm. For the 70:30 mixture, none of the six tests propagated to the second reference mark and extinction was observed after 35 -185 mm.The maximum burning rate of the reference mixture barium nitrate/cellulose (60:40) was 3.5 mm/s. Therefore it was concluded that the test substance had no oxidizing properties.

Justification for classification or non-classification

As the the substance has no oxidising properties, classification is not needed according to the Directive 67/584/EEC and according to the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
