Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
The acidic, basic, and neutral fractions of a tar obtained from a condensate of a high-Btu coal gasification pilot plant were analysed by capillary column gas chromatography and gas chromatography / mass spectroscopy. Studies were performed to characterize the interactions between basic and neutral fraction components of the tar and aqueous solutions containing Fe3+.

Results and discussion

Methylaniline was transported from the organic to the aqueous solution of about 13-27% when exposed to 20 ppm Fe3+, whereas 78-84% decrease of methylaniline concentration was observed in the organic phase when exposed to 200 ppm Fe3+for 18 hours.

Methylaniline (toluidine) was identified in the basic fraction of the low-temperature reactor tar at following concentrations:

=> 14.8 mg/g at 30.0 min. retention time

=> 19.6 mg/g at 30.6 min. retention time, and

=> 46.3 mg/g at 31.2 min. retention time.
