Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
- Immediate medical assistance required: yes.
- Skin contact: take off immediately all contaminated clothing. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of tepid water, for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Eye contact: in case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of cool water for a minimum of 30 minutes with the eyelids held open by gently seperating them with gloved fingers and seek medical advice
- Inhalation: remove to fresh air. If breating is difficult, give oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial respiration, preferably mouth to mouth. Seek medical advice. Do not use mouth-to-mouth ventilation if exposure has been via the oral route (mouth) and/or inhalation. Only induce artificial respiration with a proper respiratory medical device such as a portable pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or bag valve mask.
- Ingestion: if no respiratory compromise is present and the patient is conscious and allert immediately give 500 ml of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth out with copious amounts of water for 30 minutes if patient is conscioius and can tolerate irrigation. Seek medical advice.
- Emergency equipment: provide wash facilities for eyes and skin near work area.
- All potentially contaminated clothing and/or shoes should be removed while wearing chemical resistant Nitrile gloves. All contaminated clothing should be discarded since subsequent contact can result in recurrence of burns.
Fire-fighting measures
- Suitable extinguishing media: not required. Non flammable.
- Unsuitable: -
- Exposure hazards: do not breathe fumes/vapour.
- Protective equipment for fire-fighters: self contained breathing apparatus. Wear suitable protective clothing, incl. industrial grade Nitrile gloves.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions: evacuation distance:
- In case of small spill or leak from receptacle, container or tank, isolate the source of the spill/leak at a radius of 50 meters.
- In case of large or multiple spills/leaks from receptable, container or tank, first isolate the sources of the spill(s)/leak(s) at a radius of 110 meters, then evacuate downwind 1.3km width and 2.1km length.
- Environmental precautions: keep upwind. Dike for recovery or absorb with appropriate material. Use water spray to control and mild ammonia atmosphere to neutralize bromine vapours. Small spills may be neutralized with lime water slurry or soda ash and flushed with large amounts of cold water.
- Methods for cleaning up: cover spilled substance with water. Use solid absorbent or earth dike to contain spilled substance.
Handling and storage
- Handling: keep in a cool place (> - 7.2 degree C). Do not handle in wet atmosphere.
- Storage: store in dry, cool, well ventilated area. Keep away from sources of ignition. Keep container tightly closed. Mechanical ventilation is recommended. Local exhaust is needed at source of vapours.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Personal protective equipment
- Skin protection: if skin contact or contamination of clothing is likely, protective clothing should be worn.
- Eye protection: chemical goggles or face shield with safety classes.
- Hands protection: use neoprene or rubber gloves. Bromine will attack some forms of plastics, rubber and coatings.
- Respiratory protection: full facepiece approved supplied-air respirator.
Stability and reactivity
- Stability: material is stable.
- Conditions to avoid: avoid extreme high or low temperatures.
- Materials to avoid: avoid combustibles, liquid ammonia, aluminium, titanium, mercury, sodium, potassium and magnesium.
- Hazardous (thermal) decomposition products: none. Non flammable.
Disposal considerations
- Material and its container must be disposed of as hazardous waste. Dispose in a safe manner in accordance with local/national regulations.
- If spilled, the solution would become a hazardous waste because of acidity and corrosivity. Neutralize and flush.
