Additional information

Sulfur dust was tested for acute oral toxicity in female Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) according to OECD guideline 423 and under GLP (Rallis Research Centre, 2005b). The guideline was used due to the fact that the proposals for a new OECD guideline 223, "Avian Acute Oral Toxicity Test" are in draft stage and have not yet been finalised/adopted. The test item was mixed with refined groundnut oil and administered as a single oral dose to overnight fasted (16 - 18 hours) quails. In the first treatment step, the test item was administered to 3 female quails at the dose of 2000 mg/kg bw. After 15 days, there were no toxic signs and pre-terminal deaths. Hence, additional three female quails were tested (second treatment step) two days later at the same dose. There were no toxic signs and pre-terminal deaths and no abnormality detected at necropsy.
