Description of key information

The test substance Dicyandiamide is not toxic to aquatic organisms, with fish and daphnia acute toxicity (L/EC50) > 100 mg/L, fish long term toxicity (14-day prolonged toxicity NOEC) > 100 mg/L, daphnia long term toxicity (reproduction NOEC) of 25.0 mg/L, and a 4-day algal toxicity (growth NOEC) of 560 mg/L. Dicyandiamide is not toxic to ammonium-oxidizing bacteria: nitrification was completely inhibited, but numbers of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were not significantly affected by a 48-h treatment with dicyandiamide applied at the rate of 100 mg inhibitor/L culture medium. The EC10(18h) for acute cell multiplication inhibition to Pseudomonas putida is > 100 mg/l.
