Description of key information

In a study on inhibiting effects of dicyandiamide on metabolic activity of soil microorganisms following the OECD test guidelines 216 and 217 a decrease of nitrogen turnover and carbon transformation was identified at the highest test concentration, respectively.

The NOEC for nitrogen turnover was 2.5 mg/kg soil dw, and the NOEC for carbon transformation was 316 mg/kg soil dw.

In a study on the chronic toxicity of cyanoguanidine (dicyandiamide) to terrestrial higher plants according to the test guideline ISO 22030 adverse effects on emergence, growth, and reproduction of Avena sativa and Brassica rapa rapa were noted. The overall NOEC (based on reproduction parameters) was 31.6 mg/kg soil dw.

Dicyandiamide is of low toxicity to the earthworm species Eisenia foetida, the 14 day LC50 being in excess of 3200 mg/kg soil dw.

Dicyandiamide is not acutely toxic to birds, with a single dose LD50 in the mallard duck of > 2000 mg/kg bw, and 5-day dietary LC50 values of > 5000 ppm in the mallard duck and the bobwhite quail, respectively.
