Description of key information

In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the flammability-gases (required in section 7.10) does not need to be conducted as chlorine is an inorganic, non flammable gas and therefore the test is not applicable. Chlorine is very active under specific conditions but it is not explosive or flammable. It is able to form flammable mixtures with hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbons. In addition experience in handling and use show that chlorine is not flammable in contact with water and has no pyrophoric prperties.
A test on flammability in contact with water does not need to be conducted. The substance was shown to not ignite in contact with aqueous solution. Experience in handling and use gives no indications that the substance reacts with water forming flammable gases. A test on pyrophoric properties does not need to be conducted as chlorine can be shown to not ignite in contact with air based on experience in handling and use.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

Chlorine is not a flammable gas and is thus not classified regarding flammability according to 67/548/EEC and CLP (GHS).
