Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The test substance, an UVCB, is a clear, colourless liquid which is readily soluble in water. Physico-chemical properties are actually not applicable as the test substance is a reaction product containing of several constituents. The measured values depend on the values of the single constituents.

In aqueous solutions, it undergoes rapid hydrolysis. In technical products an equilibrium is reached which depends on the concentration. In contrast, in the environment total hydrolysis to formaldehyde hydrate and ethylene glycol is expected.

Data on formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a colourless gas which is well soluble in water and has a low volatilization potential from water. This can be explained by the formation of methylene glycol (HOCH2OH) in aqueous solution and by hydrogen bonds which reduce the tendency to volatilize. Furthermore, formaldehyde has a low logPow and no surface tension properties. No data on the pH dependence of log Pow and water solubility is available. As formaldehyde exists in aqueous solution as methylene glycol or its oligomers and the pKa of the hydrate is 13.27, an influence of the pH value is not expected. However, the polymerization of formaldehyde in aqueous solution has a significant impact on specific values. This should be kept in mind in the application of physical-chemical properties during modelling.
