Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
- General information: Lumpy material causes no health hazards.
- After inhalation: Take affected persons into fresh air and keep quiet. Seek medical treatment in case of complaints.
- After skin contact: Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly.
- After eye contact: Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.
- After swallowing: Call for a doctor immediately.
- Information for doctor: Treat symptomatically.
Fire-fighting measures
- Suitable extinguishing agents: Dry sand, special powder for metal fires or salt (NaCl). Do not use water.
- For safety reasons unsuitable extinguishing agents: Water. Carbon dioxide. Halogen extinguisher.
- Special hazards caused by the substance, its products of combustion or resulting gases: Formation of toxic gases is possible during heating or in case of fire.
- Protective equipment: Wear fully protective suit. Wear self-contained respiratory protective device.
- Additional information: Cover all exposed surfaces with sand, salt or metal-extinguisher powder. Material should not be mixed until the material
has been allowed to cool down. Dispose of fire debris and contaminated fire fighting water in accordance with official regulations.
Accidental release measures
- Person-related safety precautions: Wear protective clothing. Avoid formation of dust. Use respiratory protective device against the effects of fumes/dust/aerosol. Product forms slippery surface when combined with water.
- Measures for environmental protection: Do not allow product to reach sewage system or any water course.
- Measures for cleaning/collecting: Pick up mechanically. Send for recovery or disposal in suitable receptacles. Use non-sparking tools, because the rubbing of the product with metallic objects may cause a formation of sparks.
- Additional information: Keep away from water. Keep away from acid.
Handling and storage
Handling:
- Information for safe handling: Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace. Open and handle receptacle with care.
When working with powdered material it is recommended to use a dry inert gas atmosphere and a local explosion proof exhaust system.
- Information about fire - and explosion protection: Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke. Protect against electrostatic charges. Prevent
impact and friction. Finely distributed particles may become flammable.
Storage:
- Requirements to be met by storerooms and receptacles: The material should be stored in dry, clean areas.
- Information about storage in one common storage facility: Do not store together with oxidizing and acidic materials. Store away from water. Store
away from flammable substances.
- Further information about storage conditions: Keep container tightly sealed. Never store cerium metal uncontrolled.

Exposure controls / personal protection
The product does not contain any relevant quantities of materials with critical values that have to be monitored at the workplace.
Personal protective equipment:
- General protective and hygienic measures: Do not eat, drink, smoke or sniff while working. Wash hands before breaks and at the end of work.
- Respiratory protection: Not necessary if room is well-ventilated.
- Protection of hands: Protective gloves
- Eye protection: Safety glasses
- Body protection: Protective work clothing
Stability and reactivity
- Thermal decomposition / conditions to be avoided: Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke.
- Materials to be avoided: Keep away from water. Strong oxidizing agents.
- Dangerous reactions: Reacts with strong oxidizing agents.
- Dangerous decomposition products: No dangerous decomposition products known.
- Additional information: If cerium metal gets inadvertently wet, put it on an absorptive material and dry it with warm air (not too hot).
Disposal considerations
Product:
Recommendation: Contact manufacturer for recycling information. Disposal must be made according to official regulations.
- Waste disposal key: 51310 (ÖNORM S 2100)
- European waste catalogue: 060316
Uncleaned packaging:
- Disposal must be made according to official regulations.
