Description of key information

Fatty acids, C8-10, zinc salts:

Toxicity studies of fatty acids, C8-10, zinc salts are not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble zinc substances and fatty acids (C8-10) is applied since zinc cations and fatty acid anions (C8-10) determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Please refer to the respective assessment entity for further details.

Fatty acids (C8-10):

Fatty acids as contained in plant and animal tissue are a natural component of soil, represent a significant part of the nutritional demands of living organisms, are rapidly degraded and non-bioaccumulative and are therefore assumed to be of low toxic potential towards soil macroorganisms. QSAR estimations for toxicity of octanoic acid (C8, CAS 124-07-2) and decanoic acid (C10, CAS 334-48-5) towards earthworms result in 14-d LC50 values of 1959 mg octanoic acid/L and 1850 mg decanoic acid/L, respectively, thus indicating a low potential for toxicity.

Zinc:

37 NOEC or EC10 values on soil macroorganisms exept arthropods are available covering 6 different worm species and vary from 35.7 mg Zn/kg for Enchytraeus albidus to 1634 mg Zn/kg dw for Lumbricus terrestris
