Administrative data

Endpoint:
surface tension
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2006-10-13
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
The surface tension analyses on water solutions have been done with a contact angle meter instrument according to the principle pendant drop. An internal method (A1577) was used. The results from this method have been compared with results obtained with the ring method. Good correlation was found between the pendant drop method (A1577) and the ring method. The ring tensiometer is mentioned as a preferred method in “Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance”.

Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
A syringe was filled with approximately 10 ml of the solution and was attached to the instrument. The solution formed a drop on the tip of the needle.
This drop was examined optically by the software. The surface tension was calculated by the shape of the drop.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
other: pendant drop (correlates well to OECD 115)
