According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex VIII 9.3.1 a study on adsorption/desorption does not need to be conducted if the test substance possesses a low octanol water partition coefficient which indicates a low potential for adsorption.

Sodium 2 -methylpropan-2 -olate hydrolyses in water to form inorganic sodium hydroxide and tert-butanol.

The latter has a low log Pow of 0.35 and hence an adsorption to the solid soil phase is not expected. The assumption of a low adsorption potential of tert-butanol is substantiated by an KOCWIN v2.0 calculation which calculated a log Koc value of 0.32 (BASF SE 2012). Therefore, an adsorption/desorption study is not provided.

Sodium hydroxide is highly soluble in water and dissociates completely to Na+ and OH-. If emitted to surface water, sorption to particulate matter and sediment will be negligible.
