Details on sediment and application:
- Natural sediment with organic content of 2.1 % and silt fraction of 68 %.
- The sediment was homogenized before preparing the test sediment.
- Each test concentration was prepared separately.
- The appropriate amount of test substance w as dissolved in about 5 mL of acetone.
- This solution w as added to app. 90 g of predried sediment.
- After the acetone had dried off in a fume cupboard, the sample w as added to app. 500 g of damp sediment in a plastic bucket.
- 130-150 mL of seawater was added to each buckets and the buckets w ere shaken (100 rpm) for about 24 hours.
- The sediment w as split into three beakers, 400 mL of seawater w as added to each.
- The beakers w ere aerated over night in a climate controlled room with 15 °C.

- The Corophium volutator used in the test were collected 21.10.2009 b y Biotix (Dag Altin), Trondheim, Norway.
- The organisms w ere transported by car and airplane to Eurofins on 26.10.09.
- At Eurofins they were held at a temperature of 15.0-16.4 °C.
- The amphipods were 5 - 10 mm long.

TEST SYSTEM
- The test was run in 600 mL glass containers.
- Four concentrations of reference substance were prepared: 5.6, 10.3. 18.0 and 32.2 mg / kg sediment (dry weight)
- Three replicates each containing app. 200 g of test sediment and app. 400 ml seawater was prepared for each concentration.
- Six glass containers served as blanks. Three of them were added acetone.
- 10 test organisms were added to each glass container.

TEST MEDIUM / WATER PARAMETERS
- Natural seawater from an unpolluted site at about 80 m depths in Byfjord was collected from a tap.
- Natural sediment from the same unpolluted site as the amphipod was collected and used for the test.

EFFECT PARAMETERS MEASURED
- After sieving with a mesh size of 0.5 mm the lethality was registered by visual observation.
- Measurement of salinity, oxygen, temperature and pH were done at start, after five and after ten days.

No risk for sediment organisms is expected due to lacking adsorptive and bioaccumulative properties of the substance and missing distribution into sediment. Hence, information about effects on sediment organisms is not required.

Nevertheless, the toxicity on sediment organisms was tested with the marine amphipod Corophium volutator, in accordance with the OSPAR Protocols on methods for testing of chemicals used in the offshore oil industry [BASF SE, 2009]. The 10 days LC50 was 161 mg/kg sediment dry weight.
