Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

This test can be waived because 1,2-dichloroethane is a liquid under normal environmental conditions. For liquids, the key measure of the flammability is the flash point (see section 4.11). Experience in handling and use show that 1,2-dichloroethane is not flammable in contact with water and has no pyrophoric properties. Tests on these parameters have thus not to be conducted.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

This test can be waived because 1,2-dichloroethane is a liquid under normal environmental conditions. For liquids, the key measure of the flammability is the flash point (see section 4.11). Experience in handling and use show that 1,2-dichloroethane is not flammable in contact with water and has no pyrophoric properties. Tests on these parameters have thus not to be conducted.

Available handbook data reports flammability limits of 6.2% to 16% by volume for 1,2-dichloroethane.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on a flash point of ca. 13°C and a boiling point of 83.6°C 1,2 -dichloroethane is classified highly flammable (F, R11) according to 67/548/EEC and flammable liquid cat.2 (H 225) according to 2008/1272/EC (CLP, GHS).
