Description of key information

Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important fate process in the environment, in addition, the substance is readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

According to Harris (1990), Kollig et al. (1993) and Boethling & Mackay (2000) ethane-1,2-diol is generally resistant to hydrolysis because it does not contain any labile functional groups.

According to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006, Annex VIII 9.2.2.1, column 2, the study does not need to be conducted if the substance is readily biodegradable. Ethane-1,2-diol (CAS 107-21-1) is readily biodegradable (OECD 301A, BASF AG, 1996).
