Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The biodegradability of Pyrrolidine was investigated in a non-GLP test according to OECD guideline 301E using non-adapted

domestic activated sludge as inoculum (BASF SE, 1991). After 9 days a degradation rate of 94.7% was measured related to the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Hence, the substance is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria.
A BOD5/COD test was carried out according to "Bepaling van potentiële milieu-effecten in het water van chemicalien en afvalwater. Deel 2 TNO 1977" and NEN 3235 -5.3 (DSM, 1984). From the biodegradation study it can be concluded that pyrrolidine is readily biodegradable (83 % biodegradation within 5 days). Two studies from Heide-Haugmo et al. 2009 & 2009 according to OECD 306 with marine water support this conclusiong also for marine conditions.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

The biodegradability of Pyrrolidine was investigated in four studies:

- a non-GLP test according to OECD guideline 301E using non-adapted domestic activated sludge as inoculum (BASF SE, 1991);

- a BOD5/COD test was carried out according to "Bepaling van potentiële milieu-effecten in het water van chemicalien en afvalwater. Deel 2 TNO 1977" and NEN 3235 -5.3 (DSM, 1984).

- two non-GLP tests according to OECD 306 (seawater) by Eide-Haugmo et al. 2009 and 2012

The study conducted by BASF (1991) was chosen as the key study since it was performed according to OECD guideline 301E.
