Toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods
Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- toxicity to soil macroorganisms except arthropods: long-term
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- other information
- Reliability:
- 3 (not reliable)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: see 'Remark'
- Remarks:
- This study was not in accordance to the standardized method, because of the nature of the test medium (horse manure or activated sludge) and the concentrations were expressed in percentage of substance added to the sludge because the exact concentrations could not be known due to the variability of solids in the sludge and the microbial activities. No information was available about the test organisms, the exact test concentrations and the control group.

- Test organisms (species):
- Eisenia fetida

- annelids
Study design
- Substrate type:
- other: Horse manure or Activated sludge.
- Total exposure duration:
- 42 d
Test conditions
- Test temperature:
- 24 +/-1°C
- Details on test conditions:
- - Exposure vessel type : Petri dish of 20 x 100 mm ; 25 dishes were utilised with 5 replicates of 5 concentrations.
- Test design : The test substance was processed for assay by mixing the guaiacol into 100 g sludge which contained 11-15% solids at the following concentrations : 0, 0.1, 1, 4, and 8% (w/w) dry weight. The concentrations were expressed in percentage of substance added to the sludge because the exact concentrations could not be known due to the variability of solids in the sludge and the microbial activities. About 30 g sludge with test substance were placed over a 4 mm depth of silt loam in a Petri dish. There were two hatchlings per Petri dish. The growth was checked every 2 weeks up to 6 weeks when the growth achieved; at 6 weeks, weight was evaluated by analysis of variance and significant differences were determined by the Neuman-Keul test. Mortality was determined by enumeration and said to be significant if 5 or more earthworms died. - Nominal and measured concentrations:
- 0, 0.1, 1, 4, and 8% (w/w) dry weight
Results and discussion
Effect concentrations
- Duration:
- 42 d
- Dose descriptor:
- LC100
- Effect conc.:
- 4 other: % (w/w) dry weight
- Nominal / measured:
- nominal
- Conc. based on:
- test mat.
- Basis for effect:
- mortality
- Details on results:
- The 100% mortality of Eisenia foetida exposed to the test substance (LC100) was 4 % (w/w) dry weight.
The reduction of growth rate is observed at less than 4 % (w/w) dry weight.
According to this result, guaiacol was considered to have a toxic effect on Eisenia foetida.
