Description of key information

A study on short-term toxicity to algae is not available for 4-phenylbutan-2-one. The endpoint was covered by read across from the structurally similar substance acetophenone. The 72-hour EC50 value for acetophenone determined in a 72-hour study with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata under static conditions was 86.4 mg/L based on growth rate. The 72-hour NOEC value was 24.8 mg/L. By taking into account the molecular weights of acetophenone (120.15 g/mol) and 4-phenylbutan-2-one (148.2 g/mol) these values can be converted to an EC50 value of 106.6 mg/L and a NOEC value of 30.6 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
106.6 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
30.6 mg/L

Additional information

The short-term toxicity of the substance to freshwater alga is covered by read across from the structurally similar substance acetophenone (CAS number 98-86-2). A valid and reliable short-term toxicity study was conducted with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata under static conditions over a period of 72 hours. The nominal test concentrations in the range from 12.5 to 200 mg/L were confirmed by analysis and effect levels were based on mean measured concentrations. The algal growth rate was not inhibited up to measured test concentrations of 24.8 mg/L over the test period of 72 hours. The EC50 value for inhibition of growth rate was calculated to be 86.4 mg/L. These values determined for acetophenone can be converted by using a factor of 1.2335 taking into account the molecular weights of acetophenone (120.15 g/mol) and 4-phenylbutan-2-one (148.2 mg/L).This results in an EC50 value of 106.6 mg/L and a NOEC value of 30.6 mg/L.
