Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Several investigations on the toxicitiy of propan-1 -ol to activated sludge or to single strains of microorganisms are available. The effect of Propan-1-ol on domestic activated sludge was tested in a respiration inhibition test with a duration of 3 h according to OECD 209 (Klecka et al. 1985), resulting in an IC50 (3 h) of > 1000 mg/l. This result is supported by another study on activated sludge with an EC50 (12 h) of 9600 mg/l (Blum and Speece 1991) or by studies on single strains (e.g. Bringmann and Kuehn 1977, toxic threshold concentration (= EC03) 3100 mg/l Propan-1 -ol for Pseudomonas putida). The EC50 of 9600 mg/l has been used for the derivation PNECSTP.
