No oxidising properties; expert statement (Reimer, 2005).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Oxidising properties:
no

Additional information

The test material is not expected to possess oxidising properties. A test was conducted in accordance with the EPA OPPTS 830.6314 guideline on the regioisomer 3-chloro-o-xylene which gave negative results. When this surrogate compound was mixed with oxidising and reducing agents (calcium hypochlorite and zinc, respectively), a fire-fighting agent (ammonium phosphate) and a common solvent (water) no significant increase in temperature or visible reaction were observed.

The registered substance and surrogate compound differ only in their regiochemistry (i.e. the position of the chlorine atom on the ring). These compounds possess similar chemical functional groups (aromatic carbon and aromatic carbon attached to chlorine) and therefore are expected to possess similar chemical reactivities with respect to this chemical compatibility test.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to oxidising properties.
