Description of key information

Tetrahydromethylphthalic anhydride (MTHPA) was found to hydrolyse fast in just a few minutes (calculated half-lives) at all three temperatures tested (5, 20, 25 degree C) at pH 4, pH 7 and pH 9.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
0.06 d
at the temperature of:
293.2 K

Additional information

As a result of pre-test (Tadokoro, 2001), the test substance is rapidly hydrolyzed on pH 4, 7, 9.

In the key study (Gaal, 2009) a main hydrolysis test was conducted. Based on the results obtained in the pre-study on identification and hydrolysis behaviour of tetrahydromethylphthalic anhydride (MTHPA), the main hydrolysis study could be conducted by HPLC-UV analysis of decreasing MTHPA as a function of hydrolysis over time. In the main test, the test item MTHPA was found to hydrolyse fast resulting in formation of the respective di-acids. The calculated half-lives at 20 degree C are for all three pH values below 3.5 minutes (about 0.06 h).
