Description of key information

Key Study: Ehman et al (1997): NOAEL: 3 ppm (ca. 0.4 mg/kg bw/day) for developmental neurotoxicity.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Effect on neurotoxicity: via oral route

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed
Dose descriptor:
NOAEL
0.4 mg/kg bw/day
Species:
rat
Quality of whole database:
Only one reliable study was available for this endpoint, along with one literature study with too little detail to assess the reliability. The quality of the database was considered to be high.

Effect on neurotoxicity: via inhalation route

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Effect on neurotoxicity: via dermal route

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
no study available

Additional information

The Ehman et al (2007) study looked at the developmental neurological effects caused by dimethyltin dichloride. This NOAEL for developmental neurotoxicity was found to be 3 ppm, approximetaly 0.4 mg/kd day/bw.

Neurotoxic effects were observed in the available repeated dose toxicity studies and were the basis for the NOAEL and LOAEL in the key studies available for the repeated dose toxicity endpoint.

Justification for selection of effect on neurotoxicity via oral route endpoint:
Two studies were available to evaluate this endpoint. The key study was selected as it was considered the most reliable of the two available, based on the level of quality in the reporting of the data and the study design.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Taking into account the available information, the substance should be classified as T; R48/25 under the Dangerous Substances Directive (67/548/EEC) and STOT Rep. Exp. 1 H372: Causes damage to the nervous system through prolonged or repeated exposure under the CLP Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
