Description of key information

In a 28-day ready biodegradability test using pheylethyl acetate found 72% degradation after 28 days. Thus, this substance is considered readily biodegradable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

A 28-day ready biodegradability test was carried out for phenylethyl acetate in accordance with OECD guideline 301 F. The study was coducted using a SAPROMAT volumetric respirometer with inoculum from a domestic sewage plant, mineral medium and the test substance as the sole source of organic carbon. Aniline was used as a reference substance. Test temperature was 22oC with a pH of 7.4±0.2. Oxygen consumption was measured and recorded each day. Averages from flasks were used to obtain the graph of BOD versus time, percentage of biodegradation versus time and biodegradation rates.

Phenylethyl acetate underwent 74% biodegradation within the 10-day window, before falling back to 72% by day 28. Therefore phenylethyl acetate can be considered readily biodegradable.
