The endpoint toxicity to birds is not a data requirement for the registered substance. However, for the sake of completeness this endpoint is covered by a short summary of the available data.
There are a total of 4 studies on the acute toxicity on birds available. All studies were performed under GLP conditions. Two studies investigated the acute oral toxicity to birds according to US EPA Subdivision E, Guideline 71 -1. Only one bird in the study with Anas platyhynchos was found dead after dosing. The 14-day LD50 values were > 2000 mg/kg based on nominal concentrations for Anas platyhynchos and Colinus virginianus. The other two acute studies investigated the dietary toxicity of Ethiprole and were conducted according to US EPA Subdivision E, Guideline 71 -2 and OECD guideline 205. No mortalities or clinical signs of toxicity were observed in the study with Anas platyhynchos, while one bird was found dead (at the concentration of 1300 mg/kg) in the study with Colinus virginianus. The 8-day LD50 values were > 5200 mg/kg based on nominal concentrations in Anas platyhynchos and Colinus virginianus. Additionally, three studies are available on the reproductive toxicity of Ethiprole towards Anas platyhynchos and Colinus virginianus. All studies were performed under GLP conditions. Two studies were performed according to US EPA Guideline 71-4. There were no significant differences detected in both studies between the control group and the treatment groups that were considered to be treatment related. The NOEC for reproduction was therefore determined to be 500 mg/kg in Colinus virginianus and Anas platyhynchos. The third study was conducted according to OECD guideline 206, OCSPP 850.2300, and EU Directive 91/414/EEC Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. The reproductive toxicity of Ethiprole was investigated in Colinus virginianus. The NOEL for both parental toxicity and reproduction endpoints in northern bobwhite quail exposed to Ethiprole was 800 mg/kg based on nominal concentrations, with a measured concentration of 842 mg a.i/kg feed or the mean achieved dose of 60 mg a.i./kg bodyweight/day.
