Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

A weight of evidence approach identified the melting point for 2,6-xylenol as 46 °C (mean value).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
46 °C

Additional information

This endpoint is addressed on a weight of evidence basis. Six pieces of data are provided.

The first value is taken from the second edition of the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology and identifies the melting point as 48.0 °C. As this is data from a peer reviewed source, it was awarded a reliability score of 2 in accordance with the criteria for assessing data quality as set forth by Klimisch et al. (1997).

The second value is taken from a publication in the J. Chem. Soc. In the reported study, which was performed according to scientific methods, the freezing point is reported as 45.56 °C. As this is data from a peer reviewed source, it was also awarded a reliability score of 2.

The third value is taken from the eighth edition of the Sax’s Dangerous Properties Handbook. This identifies the melting point as 48-49 °C. As this is data from a non-peer reviewed source, it was awarded a reliability score of 4.

The fourth value was taken from the eleventh edition of the Merck Index, which identifies the melting point as 45.62 °C. As this is data from a peer reviewed source, it was awarded a reliability score of 2.

The fifth value is taken from the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, which identifies the melting point as 45.7 °C. As this is data from a peer reviewed source, it was awarded a reliability score of 2.

The final value is taken from the fourth edition of the Verschueren Handbook of Environmental Data on Organic Chemicals which identifies the melting point as 44-46 °C. As this is data from a non-peer reviewed source, it was awarded a reliability score of 4.
