Description of key information

A flammability study was conducted by NOTOX according to EC guideline A.10 (also: UN guideline N.1) and GLP. In contact with the flame of the gas burner, the test substance melted and turned into a light brown residue. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion of the test substance was observed. This study was considered as a key study for this endpoint.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

non flammable

Additional information

Based on the results of the flammability study, biphenyl is considered 'not highly flammable'. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Testing for pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water can be waived based on consideration of the structure of biphenyl and experience in handling and use.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Because no propagation of combustion of the test substance was observed along 200 mm length of the pile within 4 minutes, biphenyl does not meet the criteria for classification as flammable solid as prescribed by the Dangerous Substances Directive and the new CLP regulation. The harmonized classification does not contain a classification for flammability either, which is in accordance with the results of the available key study (Baltussen, 2010).
