Description of key information

Glyoxal and its potential photolytic degradation product formaldehyde are both readily biodegradable. In aqueous solution, the main forms of glyoxal or formaldehyde are the hydrated monomers, which have no delocalized л–electron system and therefore do not adsorb light above 290 nm. For these reasons, it can be assumed that photodegradation processes in water are of low relevance.
