Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
From APR-2010 to MAY-2010
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: The experimental method used in this study was cited in internationally recognized guidelines. Furthermore, the substance identity, the applied methodology and the results are fully described. However, the GLP are not stated.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: European Commission, Directorate Genral JRC, Joint Research Centre. Particle size distribution, fibre length and diameter distribution. Draft guidance document EUR 20268 EN (2002)

GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
Laser scattering/diffraction
Type of distribution:

Remarks on result:
other: Range for the mean MMD (Mass Median Diameter) of the three varieties of adipic acid(migrated from fields under 'Mass median diameter' as D50 percentile. No source field for Standard deviation.)
Percentile:
D50
Mean:
298.6 µm
Remarks on result:
other: Variety 1 of adipic acid
Percentile:
D50
Mean:
331.6 µm
Remarks on result:
other: Variety 2 of adipic acid
Percentile:
D50
Mean:

Remarks on result:
other: Variety 3 of adipic acid

Laser diffraction analysis has been carried out on four samples of each variety of adipic acid. Each sample has been analysed twice, and each analysis is the average result of the two measurements on the same sample. The D50 presented above correspond to the average of the analyses performed on the four samples of a same adipic acid variety.

A visual examination showed that adipic acid is made of white crystalline particles.

Conclusions:
The D50 of adipic acid ranges between 298.6 and 331.6 µm depending on the considered variety.
Executive summary:

The particle size distribution of three varieties of adipic acid was investigated using laser diffraction analysis. Double measurements were performed on four samples of each varieties. They showed that the D50 of adipic acid ranges between 298.6 and 331.6 µm depending on the considered variety. Furthermore, a visual examination showed that adipic acid is a white crystalline powder.

Executive summary:

The particle size distribution of Adipic acid was measured by laser diffraction (Lanxess, 2009). The respirable fraction (< 4 µm) was 2.76 %, the inhalable fraction (<10µm) was 8.79 % of total substance. (Lanxess 2009).

Description of key information

The particle size distribution of Adipic acid from several origin was measured by laser diffraction. The mass median diameters were in the range of about 60 to about 332 µm.
