Description of key information

The partition coefficient of Methyl isothiocyanate was estimated with EPISUITE software (KOWWIN v1.67). The log Kow value is 1.30.

Log Kow of Methyl isothiocyanate was experimentally estimated at 0.94. Nevertheless no data are given in order to challenge the validity of this result. As a consequence, Methyl isothiocyanate can be considered as potentially characterised by a low potential for bioaccumulation and adsorption. The estimated data of EPISUITE (chapter 4.7 (Partition coefficient) in the record "U.S. E.P.A. / K2 SS / Octanol-Water Partition coefficient") which is 1.30 reinforces this conclusion. The impact of errors on model predictions for a low log Kow value (<2) is usually less critical. Also, for very high log Kow values (>8) the measurement itself is generally difficult, and the environmental models are often less sensitive and predictive in this log Kow range. For this reason the value taken into account for the risk assessment is 1.3.
