Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Methyl isothiocyanate can be considered as relatively stable in water at environmental concentrations.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
65 d
at the temperature of:
25 °C

Additional information

Using conditions representative of the upper Sacramento River system, site of a metam-sodium spill, hydrolysis half-lives in a buffered system were determined to be 65 and 178 days at 25 and 0 deg C, respectively, and a pH of 7.0; results at pH 10 were 0.7 and 10 days at 25 and 9 deg C, respectively, and at pH 4, half-lives of 15 and 67 days at 25 and 0 deg C, respectively, were reported. Nevertheless, these data should be considered with care because little information is available in order to challenge the validity of the data. So, it can be considered that at environmental concentrations methyl isothiocyanate is relatively stable. The major degradation products that can be presupposed are dimethylurea, N,N'-dimethyl thiourea and methyl dithiocarbamic acid.
